Layering Up this Spring

As we enter the transition period between winter and spring, it can be a little bit difficult knowing what to wear. A lot of the time it is the transition between seasons which is the most difficult to combat when we are looking at what outfits to wear. In the winter we tend to be wrapped up like an Eskimo, and then when it comes to spring, the floral skirts and tee shirts start to come out.

What about the few weeks in between?

Layering is the style which many of us try to use but many of us can’t seem to quite nail (especially me). We see the photos on Pinterest of girls managing this effortlessly and it might make us wonder how we will ever manage.

Here are some tips on how to layer up this Spring:

The first thing you will want to do when you are planning an outfit is to start off with a simple first layer. This layer should be a neutral colour or a soft stripe and can be a blouse, bodysuit or a tee. Keep the material fairly thin on this layer because it is the first layer and you don’t want to end up looking like Joey from Friends when he wears all of Chandler’s clothes at once.

This is the layer where you will add either a soft cardigan or a jumper. It depends how cold it is outside and how you feel, but this layer can be the first time you add colour into the mix. Adding a bold colour such as red or green can add an interesting dimension to your outfit.

Next up is the jacket or coat, this will technically be your top layer but you will also have a few extra flourishes. Think about leather jackets, trench coats or a simple bomber to set off the look. You will want to stay basic with the colour of this so you don’t take away from the jumper or cardigan beneath. Go for colours like black, grey, navy, khaki and white.

It might not be the depths of winter anymore, but a scarf is a quintessential part of any layering look. Go for a less chunky style and one with floral patterns or a simple bold colour, it will make a massive difference to your outfit and instantly lift it to the next level.

To finish off the look you will want to take a look at your accessories. This can be anything from a pair of boots to a handbag or a cute pair of hoop earrings. You can go as crazy or as minimal as you fancy here, it’s totally up to you and your personal style!

  • – Make sure that when you pick your under layers that they are slim. You don’t want to wear something really chunky because it will make you look much larger than you really are. Keep to cotton and blouse material plus thinly knitted cardigans on the top of it.
  • – If you are a little self-conscious about your waistline, you will want to stick to dark materials for the underlayer and finish off with a belted middle to make your waist look slimmer. You could also go for a wrap style top to take the attention off your waist and onto your chest.
  • – Don’t be afraid to try out different textures. When you are styling a layered look, it’s better to try out a few different materials to give that feeling of interest and makes the outfit look more interesting. You can look at styles like suede, cotton, leather, knitted and combine these together.
