How I Recycle And Organise My Refuse At Home

One of the biggest things we face at the moment, whether you want to accept it or not, is climate change. I’ve spoken about this before on my blog, but I’ve never really gone into much detail about how we recycle at our home. Below are some of the actions we take towards living a bit more ethically. Small steps are better than no steps at all, and I hope the following helps you on your journey to be a bit more mindful of waste.

Separate Bins

Now, we live in an apartment, and so our main way of recycling is done within our flat as well as in our bin store. In the flat, we have a bin for general refuse, one for food waste and another for cardboard/plastic. When the time comes to take our rubbish downstairs, we’ll simply place the recycling bags in the recycling bins, and the general in the general bins. Now, I know that a lot more people tend to live in larger houses, but I actually think that houses are a better space to learn about recycling up close. Take the time to learn your local bin collection days, when they recycle, and how you can recycle at your local tip as well. If you produce large amounts of bulky waste, for example if you’re undergoing a large renovation, then a nationwide bulky waste removals company could be the best choice for you.

Coloured Bin Bags

Using coloured bin bags can help with identifying which recycling bin is the one you need. It’s great for if you’re just starting out with recycling as it can help you to remember which coloured bins go out on which days etc, and it’s an easier system to use for beginners.

Food Refuse

Like I said before, we recycle our food waste. We use a small bin with a liner and make sure we close the lid whenever it has food inside. This can help with smell, but mostly it’s so that we’re not adding cardboard to food and making it non-usable in recycling factories.

Finding storage for recycling bins, especially in smaller homes such as ours, can be a bit of a nightmare. However, we have a designated cupboard for our bins that is easily accessible and hidden when needed. If you need tips on how to store your recycling bins, take a look at your cupboard space and see where you can make changes to incorporate your waste!
